The Agent That May Have Deleted a TV Season

🔴 REAL INCIDENT, DISPUTED CAUSE: The fully edited second season of The Challenge Sverige was deleted from its production company's server, and TV4 pushed the premiere from November 2026 to 2027. Aftonbladet's sources say an AI agent did it. TV4 and the production company, Mastiff, say it was human error and a backup that didn't work (Aftonbladet, 14–15 Oct 2026; TV4, 14 Oct 2026)

What Happened

On 14 October, Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet reported that the entire new season of The Challenge Sverige, TV4's reality competition hosted by Ahmed Berhan, was gone. The season was edited and due to premiere on 22 November, five weeks away.

Aftonbladet's account came from unnamed sources:

"According to sources speaking to Aftonbladet, Mastiff let an AI agent into the server. The AI agent then deleted the fully edited season ... with no way to recover the project." (our translation from Swedish)

One source told the paper that "several hundred days of work are now gone" (our translation), and that a lot of people would now have to redo it.

Up front: the cause is disputed. TV4 and Mastiff both say no AI agent did this. Both sides are below.

TV4's and Mastiff's Side

TV4's first statement, from press officer Ludvig Ternstedt, didn't mention AI at all:

"What we've heard from the production is that there's been a technical breakdown that has caused edited material to disappear, and that it therefore has to be re-edited from scratch. And that we therefore need to push the premiere to 2027." (our translation from Swedish)

TV4 told Aftonbladet it didn't recognise the paper's information that AI had deleted the season. Later that day, TV4 programme chief Mia Lindqvist said so directly, in TV4's own news coverage and to Sveriges Radio's P4 Stockholm:

"It wasn't some malicious AI agent that got in and deleted the material. Unfortunately, that isn't true." (our translation from Swedish)

She put the blame on the backup:

"In this case the big problem is that the backup didn't work. There's always a backup when you edit this much material, and it didn't work, so when the material was deleted it wasn't anywhere else either. We have to re-edit it from the beginning. All the raw material is still there." (our translation from Swedish)

Lindqvist also told Aftonbladet that most production companies use AI in their workflows these days, "but that's a completely different thing" (our translation). According to Aftonbladet, TV4 later said its investigation showed the season disappeared because of "the human factor" at Mastiff, "not AI."

Mastiff's CEO, Matilda Snöwall, first declined to comment and referred questions to TV4. In a text message for Aftonbladet's follow-up the next day, she backed TV4:

"Just as TV4 has said, it's about the human factor and a slip-up with the backup." (our translation from Swedish)

So the reported AI agent rests on Aftonbladet's unnamed sources. The broadcaster and the production company both say it was a human mistake. We don't know which is right, and nobody has published a technical account.

What It Costs

The raw footage survived, so the season isn't lost for good. It just has to be edited again, and the premiere has moved to 2027 with no date set.

Nobody has published a real figure. In Aftonbladet's follow-up, a post-production expert estimated the re-edit at SEK 3–5 million. Another source said at least 4 million, and a senior person at a TV channel said "upwards of five million" (our translation). These are industry estimates, not confirmed costs. Who pays is still open. TV veteran Robert Aschberg told the paper that mistakes are expensive in TV and there will be a fight over who covers the bill.

One insider's line sums it up: "Even if the backup had worked, it's a total disaster that a project disappeared." (our translation from Swedish)

What Broke (on Either Account)

Here's what both versions agree on:

  • One action removed the finished work. An AI agent or a person, something deleted the edited project from the server.
  • The backup that should have caught it didn't. That's TV4's own account. The material "wasn't anywhere else either."
  • Whatever ran the delete had the access to do it. No public account describes any check that stopped or flagged it first.

If it was an agent, it had delete access to the master project. If it was a person, the same goes for them. Either way, the fix is the same.

Takeaway

This one's a Horror Show either way: either an AI agent with too much access, or a human mistake with no safety net. The lesson doesn't depend on who's right:

  • Test your backups by restoring them. "There's always a backup" is a policy until you've restored from it. Schedule restores, not just backups.
  • Limit delete access for any automated tool. AI agents, scripts and sync tools should be able to read and create without being able to wipe the master project. Make deletion a separate, narrow permission.
  • Keep a copy the tool can't reach. If the same access that can delete the work can also delete the backup, you have one copy, not two.
  • Log who or what deleted what. Days later, there are still two public versions of what happened. A clear record of the action would have settled it on day one.

It's not just TV. In a survey published by agent-infrastructure company Nylas on 20 October, 54% of 1,030 U.S. professionals who build, buy or influence AI systems had an AI agent make a mistake in the past 90 days, and only 53% can produce a full audit log of what their agents did last week.

This is where a control layer like Supervaize fits: AI-proposed actions pass through approval rules before they touch production, so a destructive action like a delete doesn't run unchecked, and each one leaves a record of who or what did it.
